Baseball loses both games in Washington and Lee doubleheader

Averett University baseball fell to Washington and Lee University 14-2 in Game 1 and lost 1-9 in Game 2 on Saturday at Owen Fulton Field for their first-ever Old Dominion Athletic Conference matchup.

In the bottom of the first inning of Game 2, Averett (3-9-1, 0-2 ODAC) was down 2-0. Senior Nolan Maccabe singled to left center field. Sophomore Mason Williams popped up to the first baseman to advance Maccabe to second. Sophomore Preston Robbins sent Maccabe to third after swatting a single by the first baseman, but was called out after trying to stretch his hit to a double. Freshman Chris Byrd scored Maccabe on a single up the middle to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

In Game 1, Washington and Lee (9-3, 3-1 ODAC) had hot bats all game long. They scored seven runs by the sixth inning. Maccabe reached first on a fielding error by the shortstop. Sophomore Gavin Colwell advanced Maccabe to third after scorching a double to right center. Bryd scored Colwell after he reached first on a fielding error to reduce the Generals' lead to 7-1. Washington and Lee continued to hit the ball and score runs to make the score 14-1. Averett managed to score one more run after sophomore Nick Romano singled through the left side to score Senior Kyle Wilson, who had been walked earlier that inning.

In Game 2, Washington and Lee continued to give the Cougars problems. The Generals had a big inning in the top of the second inning, scoring three runs to lead the Cougars 6-1. Washington and Lee steadily increased their lead throughout the rest of the game.

Despite the lack of runs in Game 2 for the Cougars, Maccabe and Byrd went 2-4.

The Cougars are back in action on Tuesday when they face Southern Virginia University at 3 p.m at home.
